Myopia Management

Patients who develop moderate-severe myopia (nearsightedness) over the course of childhood into adolescence are at a higher risk for multiple long-term eye health related problems over the course of their lifetime. Some of these can even lead to permanent blindness:
Retinal Tears/Detachment
Glaucoma
Myopic Maculopathy
Cataracts
Anxiety Systemic Inflammation
Treatment options our doctor may prescribe for slowing myopic progression in children & adolescents include:
specialty glasses
specialty contact lenses
eye drops
Below is additional information regarding all these treatments.
Specialty Glasses Treatment
Stellest, by Essilor, is the only FDA authorized spectacle lens option to slow myopia in children. This treatment has been shown to slow myopia progression in children by up to 71% over two years. This lens uses HALT technology (a series of 9 lenslets) to bend light differently in the periphery, which reduces the stimulus for the eye to elongate. Typically, the longer the eyeball, the higher the myopia.

Contact Lens Treatment
MiSight 1 day Contact Lenses, by Cooper Vision, is the only FDA approved contact lens option to slow myopia. This treatment has been shown to slow myopia progression in children by over 50%.
This contact lens uses ActivControl Technology which bends peripheral light rays more than those rays coming from in front of the eye. This change in focus of those peripheral light rays reduces the stimulus for the eye to elongate. Typically, the longer the eyeball, the higher the myopia.

Other Treatment Options For Myopia Control
Your child’s doctor may prescribe long-acting dilating eye drops to help reduce overfocusing, which contributes to myopia progression. They may prescribe a different type of contact lens (a rigid gas permeable lens) that is capable of reshaping the cornea and worn at night. This treatment option is called Ortho-Keratology (Ortho-K). It is also advisable for children to spend at least 2 hours daily outdoors, limit screen time, use blue light protection during screen time, and keep a reasonable distance between their eyes and their reading material. Finally, following the 20-20-20 Rule : after 20 minutes of reading, focus on an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds, may also be a way to help slow myopic progression.
