Neuro-Visual Optometry, is a specialty area of eyecare in which a trained Optometrist assesses the visual skills to determine a decrease in function secondary to a traumatic brain injury (TBI). A patient who suffers from a TBI (concussion, stroke, brain bleed, etc) can have a 40-80% chance that their visual skills are impacted. These can manifest in a decrease in depth perception, tracking ability, convergence, visual perceptual skills and more. This decrease in visual skills can lead to, but are not limited to, the following symptoms: headaches, double vision, blurred vision, words swimming or moving around on the page, words coming in and out of focus, screen intolerance, dizziness, nausea, balance difficulties, light sensitivity and a decrease in reading and processing speed. This can impact activities of daily living such as work, school performance, athletic performance, driving and hobbies. A specialized Sensorimotor examination by our residency-trained neuro-optometrist will assess the visual skills impacted by the TBI, and help to determine a proper treatment plan. These treatment methods typically include the use of therapies in clinic or at a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation center as well as the use of prism glasses, tints, filters and more.
